I just got rank 6 last night. I started working on this zone's fame on Saturday. I have the first Abyssite quest flagged which I hope to complete tonight and will have the second abyssite quest flagged and completed by Saturday.
I'll list what I did below to reach rank 6 fame.
First, go to:

-Under the Quests section start with Hope Blooms on the Battlefield and work your way down the list until you complete Rose on the Heath. If you get lucky with Refuel and Replenish, then the first 4 quests go extremely fast.
-After Rose on the Heath is complete you can then go and flag the next 3 quests on the list. Shady Business Redux and Full of Himself Alchemist cost a lot of gil to complete and/or lots of farming time to get the items.
Both are unnecessary for getting your fame up. I did Full of Himself Alchemist 3 times which allowed me to complete The Walking Wounded.
-The one quest you want to flag is The Soul of the Matter. This is the quest you will use to get yourself to Rank 3 and beyond.
-First buy a Clear Demuline Abyssite from the Cruor guy (it's located under temporary items) then,
Flag the Quest and get yourself a Soulgager from the box next to Cleades and then grab 12 Gauger Plates from the other box.
-Equip the Soulgager and Gauger plates and pop the T1 VNM which is really easy. If you have shadows and/or a decently evasive job and/or any mage job then it's a joke. The T-1 VNM pops near Conflux 5 and all around where Cleades is.
-Take as many pictures of the NM as possible (make sure you are staring at it straight on. It's best for time purposes to get all 12 pictures taken per pop which is easiest to do if you have a firend with you.
As an example, I did all 12 pictures on my THF/NIN solo. I did another 12 duo with King on my WAR
-Trade your pictures (Gauger Plates) to Cleades. This can be done once per day. It takes about 4 hand-ins to go up a rank in fame. Once you hit Rank 3 you can then do A Mightier Martello and Soul of the Matter each day. Doing this takes 3 gauger plate hand-ins and 2 Martello Upgrades to go up in Rank.
Once you hit Rank 5 you will be able to flag the first Abyssite quest. Once you hit Rank 6 you can unlock Secret Agent Man which when completed unlocks the 2nd Abyssite quest.
Flaco is your Reputation guy. He is located in between the Martello quest guy and Conflux #1

Edit: 2nd Abyssite Quest is Playing Paparazzi
It requires you to take a picture of any one of 3 NM's. Since only Turul is a non-pop NM, I suggest trying him. I found him flying in the sky to the East of the Sahdow Funguars and to the South of the Bugards. Make sure you have the gauger items equipped and ready to go. I would suggest /nin. This will give you enough time to snap a shot before getting whacked. Die in a safe place, reraise and hand in your photo for you Merit abyssite. | |
